Spain’s Aragon Circuit was last weekend played host not just to the first races of this season’s Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and Renault Sport Trophy competitions, it also witnessed another spectacular first – Red Bull Junior Sérgio Sette Câmara’s debut at the wheel of an F1 car.
The 18-year-old Brazilian has this year embarked on a second season in the FIA F3 European Championship with Motopark Racing but last weekend the Belo Horizonte native journeyed to the annual World Series by Renault event in Aragon to wow fans with a full-throttle display at the wheel of a car driven to world championship glory by one of his all-time heroes, Sebastian Vettel.
And despite the fact that over 51,000 people attended the WSR event, Sérgio remained ice cool throughout. Indeed, the young racer put in a faultless performance as he put the 2012 double title-winning RB8 through its paces across a number of flat out laps of the 5.344km circuit as well as delivering some rubber-frying burnouts to the delight of the fans in attendance.
Sérgio's track exploits weren't the only highlight of the weekend, however. While the crowd enjoyed Eurocup victories for former World Kart champ Lando Norris and rival Max Defourny and a Formula 3.5 win for Louis Délétraz, son of former F1 driver Jean-Denis Délétraz, our showcar crew were enjoying some spectacularly good chocolate cake in the hospitality suite. In fact, so good was it that they requested we make particular mention of its chocolatey, moussey goodness.
While the crew were busy getting stuck in to the confectionery, there was no rest of Sérgio as the young racer attended a packed fan meet and greet where he signed more than 600 autographs.
With his weekend's work done, and a spectacular F1 car driving debut in the bag, Sérgio made his exit, heading for Germany to hook up with his Motorpark Team to prepare for round 4, 5 and 6 of the F3 European Championship season, which takes place this weekend at the Hungaroring.
