The Budapest Test

Two days of testing in Budapest saw Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly hit the track in the RB13 ahead of the summer shutdown.

The final in-season test of the 2017 Formula One campaign got underway at the Hungaroring yesterday, and after taking 10 championship points for the team at last Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen was back at the wheel of the RB13. While Max's start was delayed due to a technical issue, the Dutch driver was eventually able to post 58 laps of the tight and twisting circuit.

It's always good to understand where we are.

Commenting on his final test day of the season, Max said: "Despite the late start we managed to test quite a few bits on the car today, so that's positive. It's always good to understand where we are, what we can bring and what we can learn for the upcoming races. Aside from the issue this morning, we had some updates here and in general everything worked well and it gives us a few new directions to work on for the future. Now we head into the summer break, so I'll spend some time with family and friends before Spa. We travel so much that it's always nice to catch up but after that I'll be happy to go again, especially at Spa where I'm pretty sure there will be a lot of Dutch fans in the grandstands."

Senior Projects Engineer Jeff Calam added: "It wasn't a perfect day for us, as in the morning we had an issue with the MGU-K that meant we spent quite a long time in the garage. However, we did manage to get in some laps before lunch during which we focused on aero mapping. After the lunch break we then ran with a rake to do some aero correlation work and then for the remainder of the afternoon we focused on chassis work, looking at future car development. However, we got through the high priority items today, so while it wasn't the ideal first day, we did manage to get a lot of work done."

The final day of Formula One testing in Budapest saw the team complete 107 largely trouble-free laps of the Hungaroring. Test and Reserve driver Pierre Gasly, took over driving duties from Max Verstappen, and after a compressed day yesterday, the Japanese Super Formula racer worked through a packed programme that saw him record the day's fifth largest lap total.

It was great to be back behind the wheel.

Commenting on a busy day at the wheel of the RB13, Pierre said: "It's always awesome to be back in a Formula One car. These opportunities don't come up very often, as F1 testing is so limited, so it was great to be back behind the wheel. Max didn't have the smoothest day yesterday so we had a lot of work to do. In terms of driving it wasn't the most exciting day for me, but the programme was really useful for the team – a lot of aero testing, a lot of long runs. In terms of tyre management it was useful for me too in gaining an understanding of how the tyres perform. In the end we didn't get time to do any performance runs but it's more important to focus on what the team needs to learn, and in the end we did more than 100 laps, so a good day."

Senior Projects Engineer Jeff Calam added: "We definitely had a more productive day than yesterday. We had a couple of small gremlins during the day but nothing that significantly affected running. In the morning we started with aero mapping work using our current package and then later on we worked through some items related to vehicle dynamics and suspension. After the lunch break we were mostly looking at tyre work and finally we went back to more aero mapping. It's not headline-grabbing stuff but it is really valuable information for the team and definitely gives us some directions to explore for the upcoming races and beyond. It was good to have Pierre back in the car and as usual he was very consistent and gave great feedback. He has been a bit unlucky with technical issues when he's tested with us before so it was nice to be able to give him a clear run today."
